Thanks to Mitch and Jackie Timms for the following report and photos:
Not done this since 2001 and I‘d forgotten just what a cracking event it was. The event is a Long Distance Walkers one, organised by Waendel Walkers Club, based in the village of Wilbarston in Northants, not far from the EMGP Corby 5 start at Carlton Country Park. Open to walkers and runners alike with three routes of differing lengths: a full marathon of 42 kms, an intermediate course of 26 kms and a shorter one of 11.7 kms.
No marshals en route, so we had to get ourselves round using the written instructions given to us at the start, but this just added to the occasion.
Also, no prizes and no results, but can’t complain at just a quid to enter, yes one whole pound! Full English afterwards for £3.50 (or beans on toast, again one pound!). 7.5 miles of beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, well-trodden footpaths and stunning views over the Welland Valley, plus the odd herd of cows and bulls (some a bit too close for comfort!). Jackie and I (and later Kev Naughton) opted for the 11.7K route and I am delighted to report that the Sphinxees were the first three runners home, indeed we were the only runners on the short route, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you! Times were, well, completely irrelevant….
Take a look at the piccies.
