An excellent turnout of 31 Sphinx runners at this challenging, but popular, local half-marathon, organised by Kenilworth Runners.
This was designated as our club half-marathon handicap race and there were many good performances, with Garry Barnes running strong to be the first Sphinx and 2nd in his category, and Wayne Broadbent and Lisa Abbott securing PBs.
Ninj, Andy and Jane travelled to Cambridgeshire to complete this rural half-marathon. Thanks to Ninj for supplying the following report and photos:
…it was a very nice scenic course and a well organised the only down side was it was too warm but definitely one to put in the diary for next year…
Bryan Pears, Ian Ward, Karen Timothy, Karen Winchester and Jayne Phelps took part in the inaugural Rugby half-marathon, with Bryan and Karen T finishing 5th and 6th in their respective categories.
Report from Ninj:
4 Sphinx runners took part in this hot wet muddy hilly trail run…Myles Davis coming in first followed by Andy mac, Jane and Narinder…Jane was second in her age category losing out by just 13 seconds…maybe if she had spent less time flat on her face after taking a tumble she would have won her age category. Trail shoes needed for next time if there is a next time……
One of my favourite half marathons of the year this one. Start in the picturesque grounds of Compton Verney in deepest Warwickshire, then half a mile up, half a mile down into the villages of Kineton, followed by a mainly flat, slightly undulating course out into the countryside and the sleepy villages of Little Kineton and Radway, before returning up the ‘cheeky’ Pittern Hill at 11.5 miles, then a downhill run-in and eventual finish on the lawns of Compton Verney by the lake. Well marshalled, plenty of water and a techy T-shirt for all finishers. Low key affair but only 5 of us from the Coventry running fraternity (2 of us, 2 Masseys and 1 Northbrook). Probably a best kept secret this one…. Congratulations to Andy McIntosh on his fastest half this year, commiserations to me on my slowest!
4 Sphinxes travelled down to North Devon to run the Woolacombe Half Marathon. This is basically a fell race which follows the undulating (hilly) coast path for about 5 miles before a short stretch on a soft sandy beach and then a few miles on the moorland before rejoining the coast path for the return into woolacoombe. Conditions for race day were humid and wet and quite windy on exposed parts of the course. Gary did the best run of day finishing 1st in old bloke category.
Also spotted ex Sphinxes Darren Handley and Bern Blundell and Massey Martin Judge.
Helen completed this off-road half-marathon in Coed-y-Brenin, and afterwards said:
Trail half marathon done, loved it!
Pete Fahy finished this half-marathon in a sub-1:30 time, 109th out of 5,529 (top 2%).
Wayne, Andy, Narinder, Jane and Andy completed this Cotswold half-marathon, with Jane finishing 2nd in category. Andy described it as:
Definitely a challenging course with a cracking 1st mile climb, great views when you eventually get to the top.
