Results for Harborough 5, 16-Jun-2015

Eight Sphinx runners took part in the 6th race of the EMGP Series at Market Harborough. More like ‘Marmite Harborough’ this one, as you either, like Jackie, love it, or, like Dave, hate it. Indeed Mr West didn’t stop moaning about the hills tonight, but don’t worry my friend, it’s Weedon next week and that’s as flat as they come, makes Silverstone look like Snowdon,10K PB guaranteed :).

In the race itself, pride of place has to go to Andrejs, who goes from strength to strength with back to back 5 mile PB’s. Last night he finished 3rd overall in a tremendous time of 27:41. And all this in a pair of £30 ‘Sports Direct’ trainers that are over a year old! At least he’ll be able to get a decent pair with all the running vouchers he’s won 🙂

Next race next Tuesday http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpweedon10k.htm Meet at club at 5.45 p.m., don’t forget your crampons!

Results for the Banbury 5, 09-Jun-2015

An excellent turn-out of 11 Sphinx runners made the trip to Banbury for the 5th race of the EMGP Series.

Outstanding running by Andrejs saw him finish in 5th place with a 5-mile PB (27:46). PB’s also for Jamie (32:09), Dave (34:23), Mary (40:05) and Lisa (41:48). What an excellent move this has been by the club in appointing Mr Salazar as head coach during his sabbatical.

Best performance of the night goes to Lisa, however, who hammered Jamie in the race back to the car.

Bravest performance went to Andy Mc for taking the coldest shower of the Series so far… (Tom Dable informed us afterwards that the hot showers were just next door – a tremendous sporting gesture from one of our fellow club runners). Thanks to Andy Mc, Mr Bench and Rob for driving.

Next race Harborough 5 Tuesday 16th http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpharborough5.htm

Usual travel arrangements, 5.45 p.m at the club for car share.

Botany Lesson for Latvians (1)

Urtica dioica, often called common nettle or stinging nettle is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant, native to Europe, Asia, northern Africa, and North America, and is the best-known member of the nettle genus Urtica. The species is divided into six subspecies, five of which have many hollow stinging hairs called trichomes on the leaves and stems, which act like hypodermic needles, injecting histamine and other chemicals that produce a stinging sensation when contacted by humans and other animals.

So Andrejs, simply put, do not sit on this plant when you’ve just gone about your business. I know from the Hilly 100, that you simply adore the English countryside, but this is getting just that little bit too close to nature! Hope the bike ride home wasn’t too tortuous.

By the way, re: the Corby 5, Andrejs was on fire last night (literally) and finished 5th in a fantastic time of 28 minutes exactly. Jamie, who works for Severn Trent and deals with infected water, ironically had a water infection of his own last night and therefore decided to use the race for an interval training session, but still finished in a very creditable 35 minutes. Mary Bench was less than 20 seconds off yet another PB and Lisa Abbott finished not far behind. Great to see Fi making a welcome return to racing too. Results for the Wootton/Blisworth 5, 22-May-2015

5 Sphinx runners took on the Blisworth 5 in the Northamptonshire countryside in almost perfect running conditions. Despite a slight navigational delay en route (and this time no blame can be attached to Andrejs, can it Rob?) we arrived in good time to distribute Summer 5 fliers (there’s club loyalty for you Bergs).

Course debuts for Andrejs and Jamie, the former again achieving a top 10 finish (without the aid of a lift) in a fantastic time of 28:26.

Pride of place went to Mary Bench though, who achieved yet another PB, 41 minutes exactly.

Next race Corby 5 on Wednesday 3rd June http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpcorby5.htm
