The last race of this year’s handicap series took place along The Greenway from Burton Green to Kenilworth. Since becoming part of the handicap series in 2012, this out and back route has become the traditional final race of the series. For the second year in succession the race was won by the runner starting first, this year Anne Cartwright ran away from the rest of the field to cross the line first in 50:31, just ahead of a fast finishing Trevor Clark who came home in second place in 32:44 with Laura Duggins third in 38:38. The fastest run of the day came from Rob Wheatley who finished in 31:17, with Jamie Richards (32:02) and Wayne Broadbent (32:39) completing the top three.
This excellent run by Rob promoted him to the top of the Road Race table to win the Senior Mens Championship with a total of 394 points from his 4 races, in second place is Pete Fahy with 389 points and Wayne Broadbent third with 385 points. In the Senior Ladies competition Jane Edwards took the title with a maximum 200 points, while Michael Gough won the Junior Mens title and Robyn McSharry is the Junior Ladies champion. This year’s overall Handicap Championship goes to Paul Carberry, who is competing in the series for the first time, with a total of 369 points. The Junior trophy is shared between Robyn and Michael who both scored 199 points from their four races. The final trophy, the Ron Wagstaff Memorial Trophy is also shared by Ian Hamilton and Wayne Broadbent. Congratulations to all the 2015 trophy winners.
As this is my final race report I cannot finish without saying a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the handicap series over the last 13 years since I took on the job of Handicap Secretary. These events wouldn’t happen without the runners who take part or the marshalls standing out on the courses or the ladies who have helped out at the finish, particular thanks must go to Jackie for making sure I didn’t forget to order the trophies in April as well as helping organise the race on the day. Thanks also to Lynn Banbrook and Alison Court for recording race numbers at the finish I couldn’t have done this job without you.
