Brinklow Handicap - May 2021

Who’d have thought when charging around the lanes of Church Lawford in September 2019, that our next handicap event wouldn’t be for another 20 months?! On 27th May, Sphinx AC gathered in Brinklow to race the first handicap of the 2021 series. 46 runners attended, some for the first time, and some achieving course personal bests. Many thanks to our handicap organisers for a smoothly run event, as well as those who gave up their time to volunteer and marshal on the night.

Sphinx Half Marathon Handicap - April 2021

Well done to everybody who took part in the virtual Half Marathon handicap for April. We had 28 runners in total, with 20 beating their predicted times. Congratulations to Caroline O’Brien for crossing the virtual finish line first, beating her predicted time by over 7 minutes and 36 seconds. Steve Zouch and Sue Gough completed the podium places respectively, both also beating their predicted times by over 7 minutes, with Steve finishing only 4 seconds behind the leader.

Resumption of Junior Training on a Monday Night

We are happy to announce that our junior track nights at Lyng Hall will be returning on Monday 26th April. Due to upcoming bank holidays, training will not be held on 3rd May, and 31st May, however it will continue in the weeks around these dates. Sphinx 10km Handicap - March 2021

Well done to everybody who took part in the virtual 10km handicap for March. We had 39 runners in total, with 17 beating their predicted times. Congratulations to Peter Whitehouse for crossing the virtual finish line first, beating his predicted time by almost 4 minutes. Lorraine Smith and Clare Taylor completed the podium places respectively, both beating their predicted times by over 100 seconds. Don’t forget, the April Half Marathon handicap has now begun, and will continue until the end of the month.

Cancellation: Sphinx Summer 5, 2021

Unfortunately Sphinx AC have taken the decision to cancel the ‘Sphinx Summer 5’ event for 2021. The committee have agreed that the benefits are vastly outweighed by the risks, from both a financial and moral standpoint, especially when considering our use of a public park where spectatorship and social distancing simply aren’t manageable. We will now be focusing our efforts on arranging our annual Coombe 8 event for later in the year, and ensuring it is a success for all involved.

Sphinx 5km Handicap - February 2021

Well done to everybody who took part in the virtual 5km handicap for February. We had 44 runners in total, with 20 beating their predicted times. Congratulations to Sarah for crossing the virtual finish line first, beating her predicted time by over 5 minutes. Collette and David McLean completed the podium places respectively, both beating their predicted times by well over 90 seconds. Don’t forget, the March 10km handicap has now begun, and will continue until the end of the month.

Resumption of Sphinx AC Training Nights

Our usual Thursday training nights are returning this week (27th August), however certain measures need to be taken for this to be a safe return. Current guidance requires us to have a risk assessment in place. This has been emailed out to all seniors. For track and trace reasons, we ask that you provide your name and contact number when attending training. This will be taken down on the night until we have an app/form in place.

Sphinx Virtual Handicap - August (Final Race)

Well done to all who took part in the final virtual handicap race, and for taking part throughout the whole series. The August race saw 36 runners cross the finishing line. Our winner for August is Natalie Zouch, beating her predicted time by over two and a half minutes. In second place, was Steve Zouch! Steve also knocked two and a half minutes off his predicted time. Claiming the final spot of the podium was Al Harris, who beat his time from last month by over four minutes.

Sphinx Virtual Handicap - July (Race 3)

Well done to everybody who competed in the third edition of the Sphinx Virtual Handicap. A number of injuries left the field a little fewer than in prior months, but a good turnout nonetheless with 42 runners crossing the finish line. Our July winner was Michael Gough, beating his predicted time by a comfortable two minutes and twelve seconds. Following Michael and in second place was Jo Channer, knocking over FIVE minutes off her June result.
